Mini Review: THE MIRACULOUS by Anna von Hausswolff (LP)

Gloriously, ecstatically dark music, drone metal-influenced sound that relies on a very special pipe organ.
One of the largest instruments of its kind in city of Piteå, Anna von Hausswolff uses its Acusticum Pipe Organ equipped with 9,000 pipes, built-in percussion (including vibraphone and glockenspiel), recording/looping tools, and nefarious sounds produced by submerging the pipes halfway underwater. Von Hausswolff lets out an ascendant wail at the start of “Evocation”, the pipes swell up around her like the nightmarish offspring of a THX sound test, and often pits Pipe drones against vicious electric guitars, “Come Wander With Me / Deliverance”.
The Miraculous evokes Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Swans, Black Sabbath and Sunn O))), with siren-like vocals reminiscent of Diamanda Galas, or Kate Bush. A neat package, which unfortuately loses some steam on sides three and four, where the movements start to meander and become slightly dull. The first two sides however… man, after several listenings, the power and the dramatic arcs make me hold my breath.
“The Hope Only of Empty Men” attests: “I think I see a knight/ I’m gonna fuck him for a while.”

Double LP in gatefold sleeve, sound is really good, especially the deeper drones from the organ. Get yout THX certification here!
